New Star is back in full work after a short break, but the original plan to come back at Chester on June 9th now looks extremely unlikely. The new plan is to comeback at Chester on June 27th.
The Avonbridge filly is now pleasing at home after her slight setback in April and as she follows her schoolmaster Roman Maze around, the penny is beginning to drop and significant progress is being made. A small matter of the Champions League Final interrupts the ITV schedule tonight and even the last semi-final of Britains Got Talent has been put back 24 hours to accommodate the game. Hard game to call but should make for good viewing. Hopefully Somerset can polish off Warwickshire before kick off in the 20/20 game on Sky, that did look a very good price at 4/5 this morning.
Black Nun has done well since her Wolverhampton race and will run again in the next couple of weeks. She has an entry at Carlisle next Monday (June 1st), and may well run if the ground is not too quick, otherwise we will look at options at Wolverhampton and Chester.
Baizically shaped nicely at Haydock last Thursday. Encountering soft ground of any description for the first time on a racecourse at the age of six, always meant it was going to be a fact finding mission. He handled the ground, which was heavy in places, without loving it and certainly ran as though 1m 4f was well within his range. Gradually teaching Baz to settle and enjoy racing again has been the priority and it is hoped that this work can pay dividends during the summer.
The recent spell of good spring weather finally broke this week, when heavy downpours hit all parts of the country at some time or another to signal that summer is around the corner. I was at York last week and witnessed some great racing at one of my favourite racecourses however it would have been easy to think you had turned up at a winter jumps track on Friday as it was extremely cold and the rain was relentless.
It is the first time for a few years that I have not felt positive about the Dante afterwards, although beforehand it was the general concensus of opinion at the paddock that it was a high quality field. I still feel the Derby winner may well come from the 2000 Guineas. It was hard not to be impressed by Sariska even though the race may have not suited a couple of the fillies due to the slow early pace. The daughter of Pivotal quickened well and was staying on strongly with what looked a great willing attitude for racing, she is from a strong staying female line and left the impression with me that she would take all the beating in The Oaks.
Black Nun shaped well at Wolverhampton after a significant winter break and she should come on for that outing. We will probably try her over a slightly longer trip next time.
Baizically has been entered at Haydock and Newcastle next week and they will come under consideration during the week. He will also be stepped up in trip to 1m2f.
Black Nun has managed to get in at Wolverhampton, 4.10 on Monday, and will make her three year old seasonal debut in an age restricted fillies handicap. Whoopi, as she has been nicknamed, has done well over the winter and done plenty of work both on the all weather surface as well as grass banks at home. Steve Wynne feels that now is the time to send her to the racecourse as there is little more can be done at home. It is expected she will come on for the run and we are cautiously optimistic that this is the correct distance for her.
Have just had the draw come through and we have done well to get stall 3. I am happy to have got lucky and secured the booking of Graham Gibbons, who until a late change of heart by his retained stable had been due to ride elsewhere.
Baizically as expected needed his run at Hamilton after a long break and he will look to continue his comeback in the next few weeks.
It was good to see Cheshire Prince, a workmate of New Star and the pair had a 1-2 finish at the Roodeye last summer, win a big handicap at the Chester Festival this week. His owners are shareholders at the Cheshire course so success at the May Festival will have been particularly sweet, our congratulations go out to them and of course the stable.
Today we have our first runner of the season as Baizically has his first run for us as at Hamilton Park. After eight months off the track it would be too much to contemplate victory but we are hopeful of an encouraging run for the months ahead. He has settled in well at his new yard and has even shown an aptitude for jumping during a short schooling session. After another week away from home I did not fancy the journey up to Scotland today, although this is a course which makes owners extremely welcome.
Black Nun is coming to hand nicely with the spring sunshine on her back and should make her seasonal debut in the next couple of weeks.
As most of the members have shown an interest, it is hoped that we will be having a Golf Day as a get together and hope to have a date in early September.
